Children’s Eye Exams

An Eye Exam Sets Your Child Up for Success

Did you know that 80% of the learning materials your child encounters are presented visually? Your child needs their eyesight in order to learn. That’s why eye exams are a crucial part of a child’s development. Visit Complete Family Eye Care to book an eye exam for your child.

What You Need to Know About Kids’ Eye Exams

Your child should have their first eye exam at 6 months old. They should have their next exam at 3 years old, and then another just before they enter kindergarten (age 5 or 6). Once your child is school-aged, they should have their eyes examined every year.

When we conduct an eye exam on a child, we are looking for any disease or condition that could hamper their ability to see clearly. There are 3 major conditions which commonly affect children.

  • Myopia –Commonly known as nearsightedness, this refractive error causes children to have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly, which can affect performance in school. Many children wear glasses to correct this, however, myopia control can also be an effective method of treatment.
  • Strabismus – Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes, usually caused by uneven tension in the muscles around the eyes. This condition requires treatment and sometimes must be corrected with surgery.
  • Amblyopia – If strabismus is left untreated, it can lead to amblyopia; a condition commonly known as a lazy eye. Misaligned eyes cause double vision. The brain attempts to clarify vision by ignoring the signal from one eye, causing that eye to drift off to the side. Amblyopia requires treatment called vision therapy. Amblyopia can also be caused by high amounts of farsightedness (hyperopia) or astigmatism in one or both eyes.

We’ll make a point of looking for these conditions, taking the time to thoroughly and clearly explain any and all findings to you.

We understand that kids don’t always have the necessary language skills to tell us what they can and can’t see. That’s why we’ve designed a testing process that gives us an accurate picture of what and how your child sees without relying on their ability to answer questions.

Throughout the exam, we’ll test their acuity, focusing power, and eye teaming. After we’ve run our tests, we’ll sit down with you and explain our findings, address our concerns, and discuss whatever treatment options (if necessary) are available to you.

We’re Proud to Support the InfantSEE Program

InfantSEE is a public program created by the American Optometric Association. This program is designed to give kids aged 6 to 12 months free access to eye examinations. Complete Family Eye Care is happy to participate in the amazing program. Learn more about InfantSEE.
